Oct. 9th, 2006 07:33 pmSpent Sunday with
rabbijeffty. Early birthday celebration for him. Brunched at Fellini in Berkeley, a few blocks from where I live. Then Jeff took on the traffic to San Francisco where we had a lot of time to catch up. Finally got to Borderlands Books, then a cafe, then Herbivore for an early-ish dinner.
We went to the Plush Room, a long-time cabaret venue, to see Paul Williams, the singer/songwriter/actor. He's one of Jeff's favorites so we had to go. Songs included:
Just an Old Fashioned Love Song
I Won't Last A Day Without You
You and Me Against the World
Rainy Days and Mondays
The Love Boat
Evergreen
We've Only Just Begun
The Rainbow Connection
Old Souls
I was so excited he did the last one, one of my favorites from the movie, "Phantom of the Paradise." There was another guy who shouted out his desire to hear songs from that movie, too. LOL!
What an interesting "compare/contrast" between Williams and Audra McDonald, whom I saw last week. While both act and perform, their presentations were so different. She was all about the great voice while Williams used his to get the songs out. Not that she didn't care about song choices. He not only provided the well-known songs, but he was able to provide insight only the songwriter could describe. I'd be a bit surprised if Williams did much in the way of vocal warm-ups while I'm sure McDonald, despite being tired that night, did her exercises to warm up her body for the show.
Williams had a special guest he invited to the stage: Sally Kellerman ("Hot Lips Houlihan" of the movie, "M*A*S*H" and "Dr. Elizabeth Dehner" of the TOS ep, "Where No Man Has Gone Before."), who will have her own multi-day run at the Plush Room. While it was fun to see them interact, the song they tried to duet was a bit of a train wreck. Still, it was a moment.
Fun!
