Feb. 14th, 2007 12:16 pmA year ago I was in a less-than-happy place, though my spirits were temporarily lifted by attending a concert. Mom's stroke(s) in January had me on edge even as she began the slow road to recovery. The passing of Cynthia McQuillin was really hard on me. As I prepared to sing/play Cindy's songs at Consonance, a lot of memories were triggered: first meetings and being so impressed with her songs; her asking me to participate in recordings; discussing vocal arrangements at the Off Centaur house; performing with her. Little did I know that in a couple of weeks one of my favorite writers, Octavia Butler, would be gone. And that if I hadn't had commitments -- participation and emotional -- to Consonance I probably would've flown to Seattle for the Butler memorial.
This year the mom-leg-pain from a couple of weeks ago was a scare that's been taken care of so far. Whew! I'm seeing various Octavia Butler events on Consonance weekend, but I'm feeling okay about not attending them. Since Worldcon last year I haven't touched my guitar except for an impromptu music night w/friends in January, and though I wish I had more energy to put toward readying Cindy's (and hey, my) songs for the con, I'm not too stressed about that, either.
I'm sure some of it has to do with the rush of dating, the excitement of infatuation. Even if this time isn't the one for the long haul, I'll see where it goes and try to have fun without a lot of worry (please note I said "try"!).
Happy Valentine's Day to me!
