I prefer MSW or RKM over JKR
Jul. 26th, 2007 09:30 pmMSW = Michelle Sagara, Michelle West, Michelle Sagara West
RKM = Richard Morgan, Richard K. Morgan
JKR = J. K. Rowling, Joanne Rowling
In keeping with my recent non-Harry Potter activities, I attended the Richard K. Morgan reading/signing last night at Booksmith in San Francisco. I was coordinating with
ashenphoenix and there was a bit of confusion due to conflicting dates. In the end all worked out, and she and her surly one got there in plenty of time. We caught up, not having seen each other IRL since Octavia Butler's reading/signing a couple of years ago. Fun!
Perhaps because of the date issue there weren't as many people as I thought there'd be, but Morgan's reading and subsequent discussion went well. His latest book, titled THIRTEEN for the U.S. market and BLACK MAN in the U.K. (why yes, I have both) looks to be another roller coaster ride.
obadiah came in a little after the start and sat next to me, so it was very nice seeing him, too.
One of the topics of interest to me was the issue of his book titles. Would the U.S. version of his current book sell better if it was LIMIT OF AGGRESSION? And his first novel, ALTERED CARBON, has the title in Swedish, 7-11 CELSIUS.
Although I knew Morgan was working on a fantasy trilogy (sigh), he read a little of his work-in-progress and it's somewhat promising. Clever, silly and quite different in tone from the Takeshi Kovacs novels. For whatever reasons, he revealed that in this "post great war" Euro-ish high fantasy setting one of his main characters is gay male and another gay female. I later joked w/Mr. Morgan that if he turned the male one from gay to metrosexual, I'd stop reading his work. Hee!

Yay Richard [K] Morgan!
