music mumblings
Oct. 13th, 2007 10:01 pmHave been listening to Annie Lennox's new album, "Songs of Mass Destruction." My long-time friend Chris and I had planned to catch her in concert. In preparation for both the concert and album drop he gifted me with the download of the video of the first single, "Dark Road." Both the song and the video are somber. While the album has a decent amount of variety, a "big-deal" track titled, "Sing" includes the likes of Gladys Knight, k.d. lang, and Madonna. It is meant to bring attention to the mother/child HIV/AIDS problem in Africa. It's not an amazing song, but tries hard. Otherwise, it's great to hear Lennox singing new songs (she wrote all of them, but not the rap to "Womankind").
The concert was this past Wednesday and, in San Francisco, an Annie Lennox love-fest. Another big surprise: lots of gay men. Old like me. LOL! Lennox was in a playful mood. I was delirously happy when she began with "No More 'I Love You's'." She fluttered about as she sang, while clips of the video played. More fluttering and "Little Bird," followed by "Walking on Broken Glass" (where the keyboard lead-in sounded oddly choppy; otherwise the band and two back-up singers were fine). A bit later in the concert Lennox sang and played electric piano, much like the last time I saw her (when she toured w/Sting). She forgot the lyrics to one of the songs, but "Here Comes The Rain Again" was so sad and lovely.
Other Eurythmics songs she performed included a rousing "Thorn in My Side," "There Must Be An Angel (Playing with My Heart)" and "Sweet Dreams."
Lennox ended with another sad and lovely song, "Why."
Opening act was Carina Round, who sang and played (rather aggressively) acoustic guitar. Seven songs, I think, including a world premiere. She did some early Kate Bush-like wailing, but I didn't like her stuff enough to buy her CD.

I've also been listening to the new Vanessa Carlton album (since its release this past Tuesday). Despite having the lyrics of her most popular song bashed in a recent Tom Smith post, I'm still a fan. I've seen her in concert twice (plus an in-store appearance) and I look forward to getting to her upcoming concert in San Francisco.
