With mom's health situation stabilized for now (and at least somewhat known, I hope), I've been trying to catch up with folks and stuff in general. So here's some lj catch-up:
"Dating." I went on a couple of pre-dates at the end of '05 with a guy I'd met at the first movie group I attended just before Thanksgiving. Saw "Syriana" and "Munich" (and had dinner) on consecutive days. Conversation was pleasant. Our next activity was the Kinsey Sicks show. The show itself was fairly silly, kind of good, and since there was filming for the documentary, a bit weird as there were re-takes and audience shots as well. Was it a date? I wasn't sure afterward. I didn't feel particularly compelled to schedule another get-together (as this was the same week as mom's TIA/stroke and Cindy's passing). If nothing came of it, no biggie.
A few days ago I got an e-mail from him checking in and movie/theatre suggestions. I responded positively, but still don't know. Maybe I'm becoming another of his movie friends. At the end of the year I thought I was ready to start dating again, but now I'm not certain. It feels as though there's too much going on for starting something "new."

That said, the impromptu dinner w/
debmats over a week ago was good. Back to the Korean soup place, Seoul Gom Tang II, for hot, spicy tofu & seafood soup and green-onion-and-seafood pancake. The house-prepared kim chees (cabbage, green onion, cucumber and turnip) were very spicy and tasty.

Birthday dinner w/my foodie co-worker friend E was an evening of pampered elegance and gustatory delight. Fleur de Lys was one of two destination restaurants for French cuisine in San Francisco when I was getting into fine dining in the early '80's (as in "getting into but usually not able to afford"). The other was Masa's. Both are still open and continue to be popular. We tasted each other's selections (of course!):
E: cold trio of Sonoma foie gras, duo of veal, banana meringue tart
Joey: duo of Hudson Valley foie gras (warm), lamb loin, chocolate tastes
Our amuse bouche was a tiny plate of a sunny-side up quail egg covered in an English pea puree with a drop or two of lemon-basil oil. We spoke with a sommelier (they had two on duty that evening) and chose a bottle of a California red blend (Lancaster '99), but also paired a glass of sauternes-like white w/the warm foie gras starter and a German Reisling (Auslese) for the other. Between the appetizer and main course we got a palate cleanser: a gumball size serving of grapefruit-campari sorbet. Additional dessert of grand marnier souffle, because E loves souffles! And as an extra surprise, a birthday dessert of a candle inside a cylinder cookie with a flower cookie top, sunk into a round of dense chocolate cake, with "Happy Birthday E" written on the plate itself in chocolate sauce. E gave me the "if you start singing, you die" look, so I didn't. Plus, an after-dessert set of one-bite sweets (I had E take them home because we were so full by then).
If I had to choose favorites, they'd be the trio of foie gras, souffle and sorbet. Everything was excellent and I'd have no problem getting any of them again, except possibly the bottle of wine, which I think was over-priced but it went so well with the lamb and veal.

Had dinner w/
keker ... well, we went to see "Hoodwinked" and her dinner was ice cream and mine was popcorn and diet coke. The movie was entertaining and I had a few "LOL" moments.

Belated birthday dinner:
lilacfairy. She details it quite accurately here. A new Vietnamese place in Alameda and it gets my thumbs-up, especially for the pho. It was fun restaurant-hopping, but I don't think the desserts were great. Baklava was decent. Yay for avocado smoothies and good conversation!
