Last Friday bf2007 and I went to the True Colors concert
Two weeks ago I went to a solo performance (trans-person), a panel discussion (Queers Under the Influence of Beats), the annual Pride Concert, a reading/booksigning and then the Parade.
The solo performance wasn't too good and the panel discussion okay, but not amazing, so I'll skip to the Thursday concert. Titled "Here's Where I Stand" (a song that was performed by the combined groups as the finale, originally from the movie, "Camp"), it featured the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band, the Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco, and the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, with special guests, Voices (lesbian ensemble) and GLAM Youth Choir.
In past concerts I participated with the Gay Asian Pacific Alliance Men's Chorus. It was nice to be in the audience this year, taking in the music and thinking about joining a chorus again someday. Highlights of the concert for me were "Caravan of Love" and "Accidentally in Love" by the SFGMC, and "Look to the Rainbow" and "For Now" by LGCSF. I was amused by the SFGMC's chorallography on "Accidentally in Love" -- many of the guys looked so wooden (like I would be, I'm sure!). Otoh, the men and women of LGCSF did lots of movement and most seemed happy and at ease.
On Friday, I went to the reading/signing by Chuck Panozzo, bass player and founding member of the rock bank, Styx. I was a bit surprised the event wasn't packed despite a lot of publicity, but I guess there was plenty to do that evening. Mr. Panozzo came out as gay and IV positive in 2001. He was in town to promote his autobiography, "The Grand Illusion: Love, Lies, and My Life With Styx." Though he often spoke quickly, his stories were humorous and sometimes quite poignant. Mr. Panozzo spoke of taking responsibility for his status and choosing to try to make a difference by getting involved in AIDS outreach and equality for lgbt folks.
Bf2007 and I watched much of the parade from his place on tv on Sunday, then went to the festival area to wander around. It was okay, but bf2007 seemed a bit overwhelmed by all the people and not really into doing much except eating the vendor food.
The following Friday, a few days ago, bf2007 and I went (after a fair amount of, well, whining on his part) to the True Colors concert. We got there late (parking, etc.) and missed whomever came before the Dresden Dolls, who were quite fun despite their short set. Guess I missed The Cliks. MC Margaret Cho was is good form (and svelte, too) that night.
Although I gave bf2007 a list of the performers, he still asked, "Who's that?" when Debbie Harry came to the stage. Um, yeah. When she sang "French Kissing in the USA" he leaned over and said, "Hey, that song was in the movie, 'Troop Beverly Hills!'" I liked her new songs, "Two Times Blue" and "Necessary Evil" from her latest album.
Another guest was Rosie O'Donnell. Her stand-up comedy set was a hoot! I think bf2007 was happy to see someone he recognized.
Erasure. Readers of my lj know by now I love this group and I'm bummed, of course, that they won't be in the SF Bay Area in support of their latest album, "Light at the End of the World." Still, I stood for most of the songs and did my typical spasmodic wriggling. Fun! For me, at least. The people behind me, not so much, I'd imagine.
As a fan of Cyndi Lauper, I was very happy to see and hear her. Was especially happy she did "Hole In My Heart" and "I Drove All Night" - the latter so much more enjoyable to me than the Celine Dion version.
Encores were "Take A Chance" and "True Colors." See a clip someone posted:
