computer woes (but not awful!)

When my home computer doesn't work right I always get stressed out. While I do back-ups of data on a moderately regular basis, I always feel yucky when things don't work properly.
My powerbook was having issues just before the weekend so I put off trying to troubleshoot until after, so last night and this morning (since I took today off from work) I tried doing stuff myself and finally called in to AppleCare (yay for extended warranties!) and after a few hours on the phone trying different things, ended up having to take the machine in.
Unfortunately, the tech person helping me said the San Francisco and Emeryville stores were booked up (though I could've gone in and waited; the only other time I did that I was there for 4 hours). So instead of trying to get an appt in San Francisco for tomorrow I drove to the Walnut Creek store this afternoon. My anxiety had definitely kicked in.
Further ickness: the "Genius Bar" person confirmed there was likely a hardware issue and they'd have to send it in for further servicing. Waaaaaah!
The good part was the extended warranty and I don't expect to have to pay for anything. The bad part, aside from it taking a week or so, is they may not be able to recover the files on the computer and I wasn't able to do any last-minute backing up. A few things will be lost (like my TurboTax stuff for '05 -- at least I printed everything out), but most of it is lose-able.
At least I have a work laptop at home I can use ...
Grumpy grumpy grumpy grump.

Date: 2006-05-31 02:29 pm (UTC)Fortunately hard drives are quite cheap these days and not difficult to squeeze in the two we needed over twopaychecks. Ed has a really decent job for now. Still a MAJOR pia.
We had excellent luck recovering files using Stellar Phoenix (thank gods because we could NOT afford to hire an expert as people suggested).
I wish you much good computer mojo!!
