Last night I went to the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival world premiere of the movie, "I Wanna Be a Republican," the Kinsey Sicks show that was filmed over two days in San Francisco earlier this year (and I mentioned attending one of the shows here).
Hadn't gone to many Pride activities this year. I've been thinking about last year a lot and how dad was then. While I'm still glad he didn't have to suffer more than he did, I've been feeling sad the last week or so despite seeing friends, etc. Am trying to get myself in a better mood. That said ...
The weather has been enjoyably hot. After getting home from work I drove back to SF and wandered around The Castro district, soaking in the atmosphere and people-watching. I got in line for the 10:30pm showing and viewed the assortment of bodyshapes. Maybe I hadn't been in in this part of town in a while or not paid attention, but many of the men, young and old, appeared so "exercised." Maybe it was the influx of visitors. In the past it seemed as though there was more, well, variety. Some looked healthy, some not so, but clearly worked-out.
I noticed Chris Dilley (aka "Trampolina") walking up the street w/camera in hand, probably getting in early for the movie. I waved and said "hi" and he actually stopped to talk for a bit. We had been in the same a cappella group (From Top to Bottom) just before he'd been offered the Kinsey Sicks gig. It had been a few years since we'd last spoken, so it was nice to be remembered. He was really excited about the movie, of course, but made me promise to stop by after their next live show (which I hadn't the last couple of times).
The Castro Theatre is still beautiful. There is a pipe organ, but it wasn't played that night. I said "hello" to several people I knew (including Carson Gaspar, who apparently moved back to this part of the world earlier this year) and eventually situated myself in the front row. The film itself was great fun, though the songs as a whole seemed less theme-connected than when I saw the live version. Maybe it was easier to observe because I'm so willingly pulled into stage performances of any kind. The sound was very good and some of the cinematic close-ups were hilarious.
Oh, and did I see myself? Why, yes! There were more than a few times I was in clear, momentary focus, though not always in the middle of the frame. Hee for being in the audience!
