Sigh. I'm having issues with my powerbook. I guess it didn't want me to finish the FKO-related post. Was on the Apple support line for a couple of hours last night, but I somehow corrupted some aspect of the OS so I can't do an archive and install by myself. Waah.

On the plus side I expect to be able to grab the files I need this evening (target mode -- yay for Chris who'll let me use his macbook, I think) before running the re-install. Yay for doing a back-up in January '07.

Edit: I just realized it must be part of the [livejournal.com profile] andpuff curse! Oh, well, that explains everything.

What a funny/sad icon. I don't know whether I should giggle or cry. But, you know, if the choice is you being at FKO or being able to post about it, I'll pick being able to see you there any time.

Sorry to hear of all the hassles. (Backups are such a rare "joy" for me that they are quite rare indeed. I'd be well and truly sunk.)

Hmmm. Well if she cursed you, she couldn't really have been all that upset. Curses take time.

Can you use a CD based Linux (or Unix) OS disc to boot the system up on and get recent files off of it before your restore? I won't know how to do it, but half of those at PenguiCon would probably know how to.

Target mode works extremely (too?) well for getting such stranded data off a Powerbook. I've been doing it for years with great results.

Why don't you ever call me when something like this happens, hon? Anyway...

In terms of corruption, try this: It's probably one of the most recent files in your login Preferences (/Users/joey/Library/Preferences, assuming "joey" was your login name) directory. While in target mode, try removing any files in that directory which were modified in the last 1-3 days. And also perhaps (I'm not sure how early in the startup process you die) files modified in the last 1-3 days from /Library/Preferences/.

By the way, do you have a second login besides the main one? [Hint y'all: Everyone should setup a second login just in case this happens to you, too] If you did, and could log into that one successfully, you might be able to bump yourself up to a superuser and fix things from there.

I can't remember any other tricks (restarting in single user mode, restarting without the GUI, restarting without system extensions enabled) off the top of my head. At 5am in the morning. :-)

Feel free to call me, I won't charge you. (tee hee hee)

I did think of you! Really! I was beginning to panic, though, so after the tech support call I started calling local folks (Chris, Don) to see about using their machine for the data saving. Chris mentioned having repair software of some kind, too.

As for what the problem looks like: at the start-up window with the dark gray Apple symbol the spinning/clocking icon keeps spinning, so I never get to the desktop or elsewhere.

I'll may try to call you tonight after I have Chris' machine at home.

Thanks and hugs!

Hey Tim. Probably can't use a Linux/unix disc. I've actually started using ubuntu so I have one.

Actually, Joey, you probably could, but it would have to be a live CD specifically for PowerPC architecture (that is still what you are using, right?), not the one for x86. I feel like I offered you a PowerPC Ubuntu CD a year or two ago, but I can't remember if you took it. :-)

Wait, let me guess ...

... it was a 15-inch Powerbook.

We've had bunches of hard drives fail in that model at work. Our in-house techies think it was a manufacturing error. A hole on the drive cases labeled "Do not block" was, you guessed it, blocked when the drives were installed in the PBs.
